There are two types of conversations that happen in a salon. The first starts with, “Just a trim, please.” The second usually begins with, “I probably shouldn’t admit this…” We can safely say the second one is always more entertaining.
One of the most common confessions is, “I cut my own fringe.” It usually sounds confident at first, followed by a smile that says the experiment didn’t quite go to plan. We’ve all had those moments where a pair of kitchen scissors suddenly seemed like a brilliant idea. They rarely deserve the credit we give them.
Then there are the clients who promise they only wanted to tidy a few ends at home. Somehow, a quick trim turns into an unexpected new hairstyle. Hair has a funny way of looking shorter once it’s on the floor than it did in the mirror.
Another favourite is, “I used the box dye because it was on offer.” Sometimes it works out perfectly, and sometimes it creates a colour that wasn’t exactly part of the plan. There’s no judgement here. Most people have tried something similar at least once, usually after convincing themselves that it couldn’t be that difficult.
One confession that always raises a smile is hearing someone say they haven’t had a haircut “for a few months”, only to discover those few months were closer to a year. Life gets busy, appointments are forgotten, and suddenly you’re tying your hair up simply because it’s become the easiest option.
The good news is that none of these stories is unusual. If anything, they’re what make salon conversations so enjoyable. Behind every haircut is a person with their own routine, a few shortcuts they’ve tried and at least one story that makes everyone in the room laugh.
So, if you’re feeling slightly embarrassed about that home haircut, the fringe that ended up a little shorter than expected or the impulse decision you made five minutes before the shops closed, don’t be. Chances are we’ve heard something very similar before. The important thing is not getting everything perfect. It’s finding a style that makes you feel good and knowing there’s always someone happy to help if your latest hair adventure didn’t go exactly as planned.
